Question #2 Response

#2 Response
According to the Chinese zodiac, Pearl is described as a dragon, while May is described as a sheep. I believe that these signs are suitable for each character, based on the definitions of the novel. A dragon is described as determined, not giving up easily, loyal, responsible, and pushing forward for more. From what I’ve read in the book, Pearl fits this description. She has never really given up, even when life has dealt a harsh hand to her. Rather, she took things for what they were and moved on when other people may have easily given up. One of the biggest examples of this is when May is found out to be pregnant, she eventually pretends to be the mother of May’s daughter, Joy, to save May’s humility. Although she is bitter about working at the restaurant, she continues on, staying at home most of the time to take care of her responsibilities at home. May on the other hand, is described as a sheep according to Chinese zodiac and the definitions of the book. A sheep is described as one who needs to be cared for and to be watched over, not taking responsibility for much, much like when a shepherd tends to his sheep. I think this definitions fits May well, as May was always one to wander in the beginning of the book, as well as when living in Chinatown, never being home in order to become an aspiring actress. Her big sister Pearl has always been the one to watch out for her.
When it comes to my Chinese zodiac sign, I am apparently a rooster. According to the definition provided by the website ChinaHighlights, roosters are hardworking, resourceful, courageous and talented, Roosters are very confident about themselves. Roosters are always active, amusing and popular among the crowd. Roosters are talkative, outspoken, frank, open, honest, and loyal individuals. They like to be the center of attention and always appear attractive and beautiful. Vain and boastful, Roosters like to brag about themselves and their accomplishments. For the most part, I’d like to think that this describes me well, as many of the characteristics a rooster holds are important characteristics aspiring scientists should have. However, I do not like being the center of attention, nor would I call myself beautiful. I can be vain at times, especially when people tell me to open pickle jars and I am able too, I usually flex my biceps and proceed to tell everyone in the room to check out my figurative “guns”. I will be boastful, especially in situations that absolutely do not warrant boastfulness. For example, I’ve found myself in situations where I have boasted how correct I am, even though I was absolutely wrong. As far as appearing attractive and beautiful, I occasionally whip my hair back and forth, so I would describe that as an accurate statement. Finally, to answer the question, up to this point in my life, once again for the most part I believe I have stayed true to my zodiac sign, but I have not tried too. I may have had some lapses in not being true to it, but who hasn’t?
